HUD and housing programs

How our work relates to HUD-funded shelters and housing.

Kellwright Group is not a HUD grantee and does not run shelters. Shelter programs belong to Firebird Holdings and its shelter nonprofits. Questions about those programs go to Firebird Holdings (opens in a new tab).

Where our work could touch HUD programs

  • Accounting. Books for a partner that receives HUD funds have to follow that grant’s rules.
  • Compliance review. Checking a partner’s practices against its funder’s requirements.
  • Grants and fundraising. Helping a partner prepare applications.
  • Technology. Helping a partner choose and set up data systems. Client data follows the partner’s rules.

Federal single audit

A nonprofit that spends enough federal money in a year needs an independent single audit under federal rules (Uniform Guidance, 2 CFR 200 Subpart F). The spending level changes from time to time. We check the current level before we tell any partner whether one applies. An independent CPA firm does that audit. We do not.

HMIS and domestic violence programs

Many HUD-funded programs enter client information into a Homeless Management Information System (HMIS). Under HUD’s rules, a domestic violence victim service provider must not enter client-level data into HMIS and instead uses a comparable database. We never see client information. A partner’s data follows that partner’s rules, including these.
